Designing Narrative Media Experiences:
Storytelling, Environments, and Technology
This workshop is an intense five hour design charette. Second Story creates media experiences through an approach that blends content, technology, and design seamlessly- the workshop will explore our working environment and methodologies through active participation. Participants will receive a workshop design brief, create a sketch solution, and present the solution to the group for discussion. Participants will have a hands on opportunity to explore emerging technologies, emerging narrative approaches, and contemporary space-making in the Second Story lab.
Location:
Second Story
714 NE Fremont St., #200
Portland, OR
11:00am - 12:00pm: Introduction / Lunch
Facilitators divide participants into small groups for design charette (10 minutes). Second Story, projects, people and process (20 minutes). Introduction of the workshop design brief (10 minutes), informal meet & greet + brown bag lunch.
12:00 - 1:00pm: Storytelling
Session Led by David Waingarten, Creative Director. Successful approaches to content strategy, narrative, and experience design. What considerations inform the development of an overarching creative strategy? How do we incorporate technical opportunities as we develop a narrative approach? What is the relationship between design and narrative strategy in the early stages of development? Participants engage in a problem solving / design activity that will propose a narrative landscape, framework, or conceptual strategy to address the brief.
1:00 - 2:00pm: Technology
Session led by Thomas Wester, Innovation Director. How can emerging technologies be incorporated into lasting experiences in a meaningful way? How does a content strategy inform the selection of appropriate technical approaches? What happens when the technical approach is responsive to and in dialogue with the narrative strategy? Guided by Second Story engineers and in the second story lab, participants will continue to resolve their approach to the design brief. We will experience and discuss cutting edge technical approaches to deploying media in environments in a hands on session.
2:00 - 3:00pm: Environments
Session led by Daniel Meyers, Creative Director, Environments. Participants will consider issues around integrating conceptual frameworks and technological approaches into participatory environments, both digital and physical. How does a knowledge of human interactions in and with space, and a knowledge of aesthetic context, affect narrative and technical approaches? How does the design of an environment respond to and augment experience? Completing the sketch solution, participants will apply the conceptual and technical approach they have developed in the context of a specific environment, with specific users.
3:20 - 4:00pm: Pin-Up
We will participate in a pinup and group critique, looking at each other's work through the lenses of storytelling, technology and environments- we will discuss how these three disciplines are interdependent in the production of a successful interactive narrative media experience.
